Overview

EOS R7: Time to Level Up

An ideal blend of performance and portability, the EOS R7 represents Canon's move into APS-C with the mirrorless R system. Featuring a 32.5MP CMOS sensor and DIGIC X processing, this sleek powerhouse is capable of high-speed 30 fps shooting for sports and wildlife and features the renowned Dual Pixel CMOS AF II focusing system to keep up with and track fast-moving subjects. And, for the multimedia image-maker, 4K video is supported at up to 60p, or 30p when oversampled from a 7K area, as well as Full HD at up to 120 fps.

32.5MP APS-C CMOS Sensor and DIGIC X Processing

APS-C Comes to EOS R

Balancing resolution, speed, and low-light performance, the 32.5MP APS-C CMOS sensor is a versatile chip perfect for both photo and video applications. As one of the first APS-C sensors in the EOS R system, the R7's high-resolution design benefits photographers as well as 4K video by providing a 7K area for oversampling footage, which yields improved sharpness and quality.

DIGIC X Processor

Borrowed from the R3, the R7 sports a DIGIC X image processor to perform a variety of high-speed tasks, ranging from quick continuous shooting to high-resolution video recording. In terms of high-speed shooting, the R7 supports up to 30 fps continuous shooting with a silent electronic shutter or 15 fps with a mechanical shutter, with AF and AE readings before each frame. The processor also helps to realize a broad sensitivity range from ISO 100-32000, which is expandable up to ISO 51200 for working in difficult lighting conditions.

UHD 4K Video Recording

Beyond stills, the R7's sensor also offers high-res UHD 4K 60p internal video using the full width of the sensor and the ability to work with 10-bit sampling with Canon Log 3. A 7K recording area can also be used for oversampled 4K shooting at 30p for improved sharpness, reduced moiré, and lower noise. And, for slow-motion playback, 120p recording is supported at up to Full HD resolution.

HDR-PQ recording is possible, too, for in-camera HDR production and external recording, via the micro-HDMI port, which supports a clean 4K output at up to 60 fps. Also, unlimited recording times are possible, too, and the R7 features both mic and headphone ports, as well as a multi-function shoe for wide accessories compatibility.

Autofocus and Image Stabilization

Dual Pixel CMOS AF II

Carried over from the EOS R3, the advanced Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system features 651 automatic AF points that covers the entire sensor area, for faster, more responsive, and more precise focusing performance. This phase-detection focusing system also has enhanced subject detection and tracking, with the ability to intelligently recognize people, animals, and vehicles and tracking will automatically lock onto these subjects and maintain sharp focus throughout burst captures. Dual Pixel AF II's low-luminance limit focuses down to an impressive -5 EV for accurate focusing even in nighttime conditions.

Sensor-Shift Image Stabilizer

An In-Body Image Stabilizer (IBIS) corrects up to 7 stops of unwanted camera shake when shooting handheld, helping to shoot handheld in low-light conditions and reduce shake when recording videos. This 5-axis system can be also used in conjunction with lenses featuring optical image stabilization to compensate for up to 8 stops of camera shake depending on the specific lens in use.

Body Design

2.36m-Dot EVF and Vari-Angle Touchscreen LCD

A bright, clear 2.36m-dot OLED electronic viewfinder is featured for high-resolution eye-level viewing. This 1.15x-magnification finder is benefitted by the fast processing for virtually no lag and a quick 120-fps refresh rate can be used for vivid, realistic motion portrayal.

In addition to the EVF, a 3.0" vari-angle LCD is also available and benefits working high, low, and front-facing angles. The flexible position is complemented by a touchscreen interface and the clear 1.62m-dot resolution allows for vivid playback and live view monitoring.

Reliable and Intuitive Construction

  • Referencing the professional-grade EOS R3, the R7 is modeled after its robust physical design and sports a dust- and moisture-sealed body construction that's suitable for working in inclement conditions.
  • Redesigned rear controls include a combined AF point selector and rear control wheel, which puts two of the most oft-used controls in a single intuitive-to-reach spot.
  • Dual SD memory card slots offer file-saving flexibility and both are rated for UHS-II card speeds to support fluent 4K video recording and high-speed continuous shooting.

Flexible Connectivity

Wired and wireless connectivity options are available, allowing for multiple methods of transferring photos and videos, as well as for remotely controlling the camera. Physically, the camera features a USB Type-C 3.2 Gen 2 port along and a micro-HDMI port, along with 3.5mm headphone and microphone ports to benefit video recording. In terms of wireless, 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth is available for transferring and remote camera control.

Next-Generation Multi-Function Shoe

An update to a conventional hot shoe, the Multi-Function Shoe adds a row of pins at the front of the design to permit greater accessory functionality as well as provide power to select accessory types that traditionally rely on separate batteries. This updated shoe is compatible with select accessories, including the ST-E10 Speedlite Transmitter, DM-E1D Stereo Microphone, and AD-P1 Smartphone Link Adapter, as well as the AD-E1 Multi-Function Shoe Adapter to provide compatibility with legacy shoe-mounted accessories.

RF-S 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM Lens

Designed to be an all-around lens for APS-C R Series mirrorless cameras, this 18-150mm zoom offers an equivalent focal length range of 28.8-240mm, which covers wide-angle to telephoto perspectives. The all-in-one zoom uses an UD elements along with two aspherical elements to create aberration-free imagery. A Super Spectra Coating further helps by minimizing ghosting and flaring.

Users will be able to make use of a customizable Control Ring for either manual focus or a programmable setting. Autofocus is smooth and quiet, great for stills and video, thanks to a lead screw-type STM stepping AF motor. Additionally, the lens has an Optical Image Stabilizer that will compensate for up to 4.5 stops of camera shake, or up to 6.5 stops with Coordinated IS.

Great little camera for hybrid shooters!
Love this camera! The image quality is amazing for both photo and video, and the af is elite! Lens is not bad for a kit lens although it is a big mark up for what it is tbh. Camera is also decent in low light which was my biggest fear when purchasing but these new APC cameras will def not suffer so much in this aspect.
C
Great sports camera. Happy with it
Outstanding autofocus and helpful crop sensor for outdoor sports. Also good video options - 120fps FHD, 4k 60, 4k crop. Dedicated movie switch allows quick toggle from still to video and back without readjusting shutter speed and aperture.
A
Nice APS-C with autofocus and controls
This is a great camera, the kit lens is serviceable but probably not worth it though, if you are buying this camera you are probably planning on investing in better lenses anyway. the main factor is its a crop body not a full frame which has plus and minuses. I like the feel of the camera and there are lots of programmable controls and dials. Some of the placement is annoying the dials get changed accidentally sometimes. I wish the camera was a bit smaller, I prefer the size of the Canon RP.

This camera is a huge leap forward
This camera is the subject of dozens of reviews on YouTube and elsewhere. What’s missing is perspective on the amazing leaps in technology since DSLRs were the only game in town. Along comes canon’s first serious APS-C with a 30 MP sensor and the auto-focus tech of the R3, which costs $6k without a lens. For a fourth of the price, this camera offers a brilliant tool for any decent photographer to get heretofore unheard of shots of wildlife or high speed sports. It’s a game changer. I sold my 5D and a lens to buy it. The new RF kit lenses are unimpressive on their own, but the rest of the RF pro lens line is astoundingly good, which corresponds to the price tags.

Compact with lots of features
Lots of features in this one. You really need to take the time to study it. Has 30 fps electronic shutter speed but the 15 fps mechanical shutter is enough for me. Don't skimp on the memory card. A slow memory card will lessen some features. A negative is the body is not as durable as my old Canon EOS 7D. The 18-150 is kit lens is an expensive add on. It's of no value to me since I have several lenses.

If you want a feature rich APS-C, this is the one.

Ungodly Good Autofocus - Love the R7
Bought this as a b-cam for Canon C70, live theater videography, where the most important feature is no recording limit. Hopefully the days of 30 minute recording limits are over. I've used it on two shoots so far - two act theater shows, and was able to record over two hours of theater with bars left on the battery and no overheating indicator at all. I've also used it recreationally to get action photos of our dogs at the local dog park and that is where this camera really shines. Ungodly autofocus; I mean I've never seen anything like this. I've barely lifted the camera to get shots of multiple dogs playing and the AF just instantly locks onto the dogs eyes, and sticks like glue. There is no camera I've ever used that even comes close. Canon has everyone beat when it comes to autofocus. Still in the early days of using this camera, but it's a keeper. The only downside is no available external battery grip. My other b-cams - two EOS-Rs - both have battery grips attached and they never come off. With the battery grips you just never need to think about battery life at all. Oh, I also was pleased to find that the DC power attachments for the EOS-R work with the USB-C on the R7 to give it an easy power backup. With those attached, the R7 battery indicator just greys out and you're set for AC power for as long as you need. Well done Canon.

Canon's Crop-Sensor powerhouse
I purchased the Canon EOS R7 to supplement my larger full frame Canon camera bodies, specifically the Canon EOS R5 and Canon EOS R3. The R7 has a more compact form factor and is super light at 1.35 lbs with the battery. The crop sensor gives 1.6x more reach using my RF mount lenses when compared to the full-frame models. I appreciate that extra reach when shooting wildlife. With the 18-150mm IS STM kit lens, you have a nice walk-around combo that is both light and versatile. From wide angle to Zoom this kit lens is decent but of course will not match low light and optics of a “L” series lens. The camera comes with a LP-E6NH battery which is the same battery used in the Canon R5 and Canon R6. To date there is no Canon branded battery grip for this camera to add a second battery but you can shoot all day long with a single LP-E6NH and stay lightweight. I owned the Canon 7D Mark II and in comparison, the mirrorless EOS R7 is quite the update. The camera has 32.5 megapixels which surpasses the 17.3 megapixels that I would get with my EOS R5 in crop mode. This Digic X image processor produces fantastic images. Canon has made massive improvements to the autofocus. There are two features that make this camera a good buy for the price. The first feature is eye-tracking. You can toggle in the setting menu between people, animal and vehicle. You will see the focus box on the viewfinder or LCD lock in on nearest eye with a half press of the shutter. I like the menu layout of Canon and find it extremely intuitive. I setup the Mymenu option to have shortcuts to each of the settings that I am likely to change often like subject detection, eye detect, drive mode. Etc. I like that the LCD “Articulates” so you can flip it around to protect it or use it to shoot at views other than eye level. The second feature that makes this camera a buy is IBIS. The In Body Image Stabilizer allows you to shoot handheld in situations that would require a tripod in the past. The IBIS can work in tandem with RF lenses that have Image Stabilization built in as well. This camera will work with existing Canon RF lenses and RF-S lenses that are geared more towards this crop sensor. There are only a couple of RF-S lenses that the time of this review but I suspect that many more are in development. Also, if you are moving up from a Canon DSLR with the EF or EF-S mount, you can purchase a Canon mount adapter and use your existing lenses. The camera uses UHS-II SD cards which are convenient. The UHS-II SD will help when changing the drive mode from Single shoot to multi-shot. UHS-II will allow for more continuous shot before need to wait for the buffer to clear. Since the camera has dual card slots, you can pick from options to give you extra redundancy if a card should fail. I like to save my work with JPG file format since it is versatile to one card while sending RAW files which give you more details for editing in post. You can shoot up to 30 frames per second when using the electronic shutter and 15 when using the mechanical shutter. 15 frames per second mechanical even exceeds the speed of the EOS R3. The electronic shutter offers the ability to shoot silently which can be handy with certain wildlife. The can be helpful when shooting in public to draw less attention and to avoid camera noises at a live performance. The camera has nice video options as well. You can shoot video in 4K at 60 frames per second oversampled from 7K. At this price this is an excellent entry into the Canon mirrorless market and a great second body or “B-roll” body if you are more focused on video. This camera has the updated Canon multi-function hotshoe found on the Canon EOS R3. Canon sells new accessories such as the DM-E1D stereo mic that will get power directly from the new mount. Of course, the mount will support an external flash as well. The mode dial to the right of the viewfinder offers automode as well as Aperture Priority when you want to control “bokeh” or background blur and Shutter priority if you want to freeze time or prefer to show motion in your photos. It has options for BULB, Manual and custom as well. The EOS R7 has all of the connectivity options that you could need. USB-C, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. So does this camera match up to the EOS R5 or R7? It does not but offers many of the same features at a great price point. There are times when I will reach for the R7 for the extra reach over the full frame Canon counterparts. I find the smaller form factor and weight a nice alternative when traveling. I do prefer the button layout on the full frame camera but that is likely since I am more used to them and have developed muscle memory. The combination of the control wheel and joystick are usable. I recommend this camera and if making the choice between this and the R10, I would go with this model if possible, for IBIS. IBIS is a real game changer. This is a great primary camera or backup camera. I feel that it is a great gateway camera for a beginner or amateur photographer. This camera has a well-rounded feature set that will make it a go to for professional photographers in certain situation. When you make your purchase remember to register with Canon to get notification of future firmware updates. I also like to carry a second battery. The included camera strap is comfortable and on brand. I am pleased with my purchase. Canon has hit a home-run at this price point. This is the best crop sensor camera that I have owned. Thank you for taking the time to read my review.
