Nikon Z50 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm and 50-250mm Lenses

I already own a Z6 & D750 that I use for Astrophotography, but I wanted something smaller and lighter for an EU vacation I'm taking in December; I'm limited on baggage. This camera takes amazing pictures and I don't need a separate camera bag. Bottom line, very small, very light, but feature rich although a lot of my shots will probably be Auto. Trying to enjoy the vacation and not spend too much time behind the camera.

I typically keep my D500 permanently connected to the 200-500mm for wildlife, and I wanted a small portable camera that had excellent manual controls that I can carry easily and shoot high quality photos and 4K videos of people with, that are normally shot with a cell phone. The kit 16-50mm lens is tiny and with it attached the camera is almost as easy to carry anywhere as the older nikon 1 j4 camera, while having more familiar controls, a better grip, and much better image and video quality.

The key to good photos is having the camera with you when the opportunity arises. So often, you take pictures in your head because you only have your iphone and it just won’t do the job properly. This Z50 is small and light enough to take everywhere. Pictures are sharp, colors are great, controls fairly easy to use. Looking forward to Z mount fast DX lenses!

The low light of the camera is simply amazing all the way up into 12800 it’s completely usable. Past that it’s personal preference but I could easily use the highest without extending. It’s tack sharp the 50-250 is definitely the one I’ve used more on the camera to get nice bird shots. All in all I’m still working over the camera and learning some new things here and there so I can’t say much but what I can say is it’s perfect for getting into the z system like I wanted. It would be the next best camera to get besides the A6400 I’d actually pick it over the 6400 due to the grip of you have small hands or big it’ll fit you and make the exp much better over time that grip really truly makes or breaks a camera and yes mirrorless cameras can be too small it’s why the Fuji’s haven’t exactly been on my list to buy other than the xh1 but even so it didn’t meet my requirements much. The appeal of the Nikon z50 just captivates you and that’s really preference more than anything so if you like the looks I can definitely tell you to buy the camera cause it’ll handle whatever you wanna do really. I’d honestly buy the body alone plus the 85 s 1.8 but that was more money than I had to spend so I just went the next best thing and got the kit, over all it was the best kit you can get aside from maybe Fuji but again the lenses on Fuji are lit but the bodies need major tweaking to win me over.

This is like a bigger version of the Nikon 1 J5 which really love using but this Z50 has a lot more features. Kudos to the Nikon Team of experts. Go go go!

It’s got so much going for it

It’s light, small, comfortable to carry and to handle, extremely intuitive and ergonomic.

Once setup with BBF, it is actually more convenient to use than my similarly setup DSLRs.

High ISO is surprisingly good; but don’t expect to be able to take quality indoor Futsol photos at highest auto settings

Auto Focus works very well, and quickly.

It offers adaptability and functionality for inexperienced as well as experienced photographers.

Color accuracy is excellent

With the adaptor, I can use my other Nikon lenses (although, as advertised, some lose auto-focus capability).

Shooting in RAW provides more than adequate size files.

Being able to see exactly what you will get in the view finder, or on the screen, is reason enough to own this mirror-less camera

The kit lenses, while not fast, are adequate for most purposes, and provide good zoom range.

It is great fun to use.

Did I mention it is great fun to use.

It seems like a bargain to me for what it provides as a kit.

One may quibble about the battery capacity, or the pivoting screen that can get in the way for tripod use, or some missing professional capability. Get over it. Nikon is clearly trying to appeal to a very broad audience; and is largely successful. Nothing is perfect.

I’ve yet to use the movie capability or the blue tooth connectivity. To be honest, I do not care about either and will assume from the tech specification that the former, at least, is good. I have no idea how it compares to the competition; but then it enables me to stay in the Nikon family

Nobody is paying attention to this little camera because it does not have the pro specs, it's not dual card slot, it's only 20.9 MP, it's a huge mount with a small sensor, full-frame is better than APS-C, the lens selections are not good, blah...blah..blah... Everyone is missing out the intention Nikon has on this camera and that is the FUN factor in photography. I have and used Nikon D7100, D810, D850, D500, and the Z7. All of them are really grate cameras. Well constructed, weather sealed, rugged, and most of all aimed for professional use. I also have a bunch of Nikon lenses that you can say are also pro grade. When Nikon first announced this camera I was not really thrilled like the way I was when they debuted the D850 and Z6/7. And like everyone before investing on a new equipment I do research first before committing. When it became available for pre-order I went ahead and took the dive of getting one. Now that I tried it I was amazed with how compact this camera is. It literally a pocketable camera like its point and shoot cousins. The capabilities in stills and video is on par with my D500 except of the size, additional features, and weight. I take this camera with me most of the time than my other ones. It's fun to shoot it. IMO it's a better alternative than using my smartphone for taking photo at least the shape is familiar for me with that DSLR/Mirrorless feeling in your hand. The size makes good use for candid and street photography because it's less noticeable and discrete. It's a well rounded camera for taking almost any kind of photography. The 20.9MP is just within the sweet spot for resolution good enough for a 13 x 19 size print out. I do not pixel peep or even scrutinize the resolution like Youtuber reviewers do because at the end of the day what matters most it your overall satisfaction with the product since you are the user.

I bought this camera in the store with one lens and then came home to look for instructions and found it at bestbuy online with 2 lens for about $300 cheaper. So I took the first one back and bought this 2 lens kit/camera on line. I'm glad I did as I ended up spending that amount plus for a Z mount adapter and a better lens. (I bought a macro lens f2.8) The Z mount adapter allows you to use old Nikon lens you may have or newer better lens per the salesman. These are entry level lens again per the salesman. The 16-50mm I can't seem to get good photos with. (the reason I bought the f.28 lens) The 50-250 does ok especially in bright sun but I would like more zoom. I came from using a 100x zoom point and shoot and would like that sort of zoom on this Z50 bundle. It's no where close. The salesman said I would have to spend over a $1000 on a lens for that sort of zoom. My point and shoot was $400 from best buy but it's old and so are my eyes, I needed a better brighter viewfinder. This has it. I don't edit my photos so wanted something with great clarity. These lens I don't think are it but if you look at my photos and think so then this camera lens kit is for you. Maybe I just haven't learned the camera yet as there are a ton of menu options. I would suggest watching a lot of youtube tutorials to learn all the functions. Here's some of my photos with the dx 50-250 lens. It's a lot to learn so if you take the time you probably will get better photos than what I have. The flag is zoomed all the way, taken from a parking lot across the river and a road from the stadium. The bird in tree is taken about 10 ft over and then up 15 or 20 ft zoomed all the way out. (which how could I get a flag further away, these are things I don't know) . The squirrel about 2 feet from my feet, the bunny about 12 to 15 ft away but not zoomed all the way out. and the yellow goldfinch 20 to 30 ft away. And the sunflower straight up above my head not zoomed all the way. If I use a tripod the shots are better but I don't have those handy to show. Not sure I would recommend to a friend or not so I clicked no. It's just a lot to learn with this camera unless you use auto all the time.

When a fatal mirror failure downed my 13 year old DSLR, the new mirrorless offerings held great appeal. I chose the Z50 with the 16-50 and 50-250 kit lenses, along with the new FTZ-II adapter for my older lenses. Everything works flawlessly, and I especially appreciate the lighter weight of my new gear. The quality is excellent, too. Though the kit was decent value, the adapter seemed overpriced.
