- Affordable telephoto alternative, at a costThere seems to be a consensus, both here and elsewhere, that the ideal lens with which to use this extender is the latest version of the f/2.8 70-200. That's how I use it (on a Canon 6D), and while it does indeed double my zoom capabilities, there are some important hitches:
- Not happy with the autofocusNot happy with the failure of auto focus while using my EF 100-400 zoom lense. It only works if I use the screen mode instead of the view finder to shoot.
- Auto focus doesn't work on most Canon camerasAuto focus does not work with the 2x-III extender on most Canon cameras. Nothing on the product specs or description documents this shortcoming. Auto focus works in LiveView only on my 6D/100-400 combo, but it is way too slow to be useful at all.
- Perfect Compliment to 135LI am using this 2X extender with my 135L, and I must say that after a little micro adjustment of +5, this is incredible! I now have a 270mm f/4 lens, and the images are very, very nice. Wide open (f/4), there is a little softness or dreamy effect, but stopped down to f/5.6, images are extremely sharp and contrasty. Yes, this will enhance any flaw in your lens, but with higher quality lenses, should not be much of an issue. AF is fast, I have not had any problems with its speed or accuracy. Overall, I am extremely pleased with this extender.
- Auto focus doesn't work :-(I got this for my EF 100-400 IS lens and it won't autofocus? On the documentation is says it works with the lens Well it works you just have to manual focus and my eyes are like they used to be so it's basically worthless. I just picked up a new 7D mk 2 but haven't tried it with that, I hope it does otherwise I wasted a bunch of money on it. If I knew that it wouldn't auto focus I would have bought a knock off for half the price that does the same thing. Not a happy camper.
